Course Overview

The aim of the History KS3 curriculum at BYA is to ensure all students have the opportunity to explore the past and understand how it influences our culture and values today.

Year 7  

In Year 7 students are given the opportunity to study a theme in British History that consolidates their chronological knowledge from before 1066. Allowing them to reflect on the many changes and continuities of the British Isles. They study the development of Church, state and society in Medieval Britain 1066-1509 and Early Modern Britain 1509-1745, and consider how this influences society today. Additionally, students are given the chance to reflect on the impact of the Industrial Revolution on Britain and the rest of world. Considering the consequences of empire and trade on different groups of people. Finally, students will investigate a local site.

Topic one: The changing face of the British Isles.

Topic Two: The Norman Conquest

Topic Three: Tudor England

Topic Four Industrial Britain and the British Empire.

Topic Five: Site Visit

Year 8

In year 8 students are given the opportunity to develop their understanding of modern History, with a particular focus on conflict, war, political oppressions and freedoms. Students will study the challenges for Britain, Europe and the wider world in the 20th Century. Developing an understanding of the causes and consequences of two world wars. Students will also explore the difficulties people face when oppressed and persecuted, with case studies of the Civil Rights Movement in 1960s America and the Holocaust.
