The Science department aims to ensure every child is able to understand and critically evaluate any scientific problem they may be faced with in an ever-changing, modern world.
Through the courses that we offer, we seek to provide an inspiring range of experiences both in and outside the classroom.
Taught in Year 7 and Year 8
Pupils are assessed against the specification as set out by AQA. The assessment consists of personalised assessments set by classroom teachers, end of unit tests and formal end of year examinations that are sat by the entire cohort. Pupils will also be required to demonstrate understanding of ‘How Science Works’ through practical experiments.
Parents can help their children by ensuring they are prepared for lessons with the correct equipment. This includes a pen, pencil, ruler and protractor in addition to a scientific calculator.
As a parent or carer you do have a pivotal role to play in supporting your children in their learning at home and undoubtedly you have the greatest influence on the achievement of your child. Therefore, we would like you to take every opportunity to support your child with science homework and revision throughout the year. Science club allows pupils to take on engineering challenges, carry out fun and exciting scientific investigations and learn about where STEM subjects can take them.
Combined Science covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSE
The Science curriculum offers a range of pathways which enable all students to excel. The pathway covers the prescribed programme of study for Science at KS4, as set out by the National Curriculum.
From Year 9, pupils will be prepared to sit an AQA Trilogy Combined Science qualification at the end ofYear 11. This is a three-year course, which allows them time to fully embed, develop and apply the skills and knowledge that are required to be successful in their final Science examinations. This will lead to 3 GCSE Science qualifications.
Lessons will focus on delivering the content of Biology, Chemistry and Physics through theory based lessons. Other aspects of the skills, knowledge and understanding of How Science Works will be developed through investigative work using a ‘practical enquiry’ approach to the teaching. This course provides a good foundation for progression to traditional academic A Levels.
Combined Science (AQATrilogy): Equivalent to 2 Science GCSEs. Most students will sit 2 exams foreach Science discipline (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) at the end of Year 11,each exam will last 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Triple Science (AQATrilogy): Equivalent to 3 Separate Science GCSEs. If selected for this pathway,students will sit 2 exams for each discipline (Biology, Chemistry and Physics)at the end of Year 11, each exam will last 1 hour 45 minutes.
Studying science will broaden your understanding of the world around you, may allow you to influence and develop accepted scientific knowledge, and will give you the skills needed to approach most matters in a reasoned and analytical manner. As such, it is a highly valued subject, helping students develop sought after, transferrable skills applicable to a huge range of areas. Key Stage 4 Science will provide students with the opportunities required for them to access A Level Science subjects or alternative Post-16 courses.
